Cookie Policy / Privacy Choices

This site sets no cookies. Here is exactly what that means, and what would change if it stopped being true.

What this site currently uses

State of Emergency sets no cookies. No strictly necessary cookies, no analytics cookies, no functionality cookies, no advertising or targeting cookies.

There is no consent banner because there is nothing to consent to. We verified this against the production site rather than assuming it from the way the site was built.

Storage and third-party requests

Two things are worth naming even though neither is a cookie:

  • Basemap tiles. On the Live Emergency Map, your browser requests map tiles directly from CARTO. That connection exposes your IP address and user agent to CARTO, as any direct request does. It does not set a cookie on our behalf.
  • Browser caching. Pages and assets are cached by your browser and by our content delivery network so the site loads quickly. Cached files are not identifiers and are not used to recognise you.

Your controls

  • Browser settings. Every major browser lets you block or clear cookies and site data. Since we set none, this changes nothing about how our pages behave.
  • Global Privacy Control. We do not run the tracking a GPC signal is meant to stop. If that ever changes, GPC will be honored from the start.
  • Do Not Sell or Share. There is no sale or sharing to opt out of. If advertising technology is introduced, a working opt-out will be published alongside it.

We will not list a control that does not do anything. A preference center with nothing behind it is worse than no preference center.

How to verify this yourself

You do not have to trust a cookie policy, and you should not have to.

Open your browser's developer tools, load any page on this site, and check the Application or Storage tab for cookies and local storage, and the Network tab for requests to domains other than state-of-emergency.com.

On every page except the Live Emergency Map, you should find no cookies and no third-party requests at all. On the map page, you will see requests to CARTO for the map background. If you ever find something else, that is a discrepancy worth reporting to us.

If this changes

Adding analytics, advertising or affiliate tracking would mean cookies or similar technologies. If that happens, this page will list each one — purpose, provider, retention, first or third party — and a real consent mechanism will be in place before the technology is deployed.
